Psychiatry Group To Probe Treatment Of Dissidents In China DOW JONES NEWSWIRES YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP)--The world's top psychiatry association announced Monday it will send an international team to investigate complaints that Chinese psychiatrists use drugs and mental treatments to silence hundreds of political dissidents. The move by the World Psychiatric Association increases the pressure on China to respond to the allegations and, if it doesn't, could nudge Beijing one step closer to being kicked out of the professional brotherhood. Speaking Monday at the World Congress of Psychiatry, Yokohama, just south of Tokyo, outgoing association president Juan J. Lopez-Ibor said he was concerned that nearly 500 healthy dissidents were locked away in mental institutions. In particular, he noted allegations that China uses its hospitals to pacify and silence members of the banned spiritual sect Falun Gong, which was outlawed in the mainland in 1999 for allegedly threatening national security. Thousands of its followers have been arrested and sent to labor camps. "We are concerned they have Falun Gong members who are not patients in their hospitals," Lopez-Ibor said. "I am concerned about the abuse of psychiatry." The president said roughly 500 Falun Gong members may be wrongly committed, based on reports from nonprofit groups and local sect members. In some cases, individuals whose family members claimed they were sane have been forced to take psychiatric drugs and allegedly given electroshock treatment. In one recent case, one inmate was held for 210 days at the Ranching No. 4 Psychiatric Hospital in eastern China. He had been detained earlier after trying to form a labor union at a silk factory independent of the sole, government-controlled one, according to family members and labor activists. Chinese officials vehemently deny holding political opponents in mental hospitals.
