UNSEALED ALI MOHAMED CASE DOCUMENTS SOURCE   Affirmation filed June 4, 1999   Read the Affirmation: GIF   PDF (290 KB)   This 18-page document provides further details about the seven-month incarceration of Ali Mohamed, who is charged with training members of Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden's organization. The terrorist group is alleged to have been behind devastating bomb attacks on two U.S. embassies in Africa and the World Trade Center in New York. Both the defendant ex-U.S. Army Sgt. Mohamed and the federal prosecutor requested that the records of the case be sealed. However, an explanation as to what prompted the request has been redacted. Between Oct. 13, 1998, and April 19, 1999, the government sought and received no fewer than seven continuances with the consent of the defendant -- which may explain the extreme length of time Mohamed was held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center without being formally charged. At one point in the transcripts Mohamed's lawyer, James Roth, explains, "It is clear from the actions of Mr. [redacted], that at least have been attributed to Mr. Bin Laden, that there is a certain disregard for the safety of others, and there is the position, by this defendant that if it comes out that he is been [sic] arrested ..." The agent relays testimony by four confidential sources confirming Mohamed's connection with bin Laden and describes attempts by Mohamed to seek a security clearance in order to work for a private Department of Defense contractor.
