Forgiveness is the release of all hope for a better past

[Karl Note:  The traditional Western view of life is greatly influenced by the Christian concept of love and forgiveness.  The usual understanding of the Islamic way of life is certainly not that way.  So, those who promote "forgiveness" at a time of terrorist attack are increasingly in the minority.  The enemy has no interest in loving us.  My personal attitude on this is that love in the face of a terrorist is NOT an effective technology.  Or, perhaps, it is OK to love someone WHILE you shoot him -- but not only is the shooting of the terrorist right, but there is an ethical rightness in shooting even an innocent person if that prevents a hundred intended assassins from committing their crimes.  Ethics has to be a balance of reasoned judgment about the good or harm caused by any action.  A simple rule of ALWAYS loving your enemy, or ALWAYS killing the American -- either rule fails the test of rationality.]

A Course in Miracles
Through forgiveness the thinking of the world is reversed. The forgiven world becomes the gate of Heaven, because by its mercy we can at last forgive ourselves. Holding no one prisoner to guilt, we become free. Acknowledging Christ in all our brothers, we recognize His Presence in ourselves.
