My wife Dorothy had been through some heavy chemo in the hospital and was released to a skilled nursing facility where she died 20 days later.
An hour before she passed from this life, she opened her eyes. She had been comatose 5 days, had no food or fluids because she had lost the ability to swallow.
I asked her if she could hear me and she nodded yes. I then told her of a conversation with our grandson in prison and that he wanted me to tell her that he loved her very much.
I asked her if she understood and again she nodded her head.
A half hour later she stopped breathing and I summoned the caregivers to come. When they arrived she had started breathing again. This cycle happened a couple of times more then ceased.
Her heart stopped beating 5 minutes later at 8:00 P.M. 16 May, 2000.
She had a living will and another document that stated that no paddles or artificial means to prolong her dying be used. The nursing home kept her comfortable and clean.
It did not get used as Dorothy started breathing and regained consciousness. Thank God! Apparently nurses don't want to loose patients by death if they can intervene against the wishes of the patient.
