I'm Scared -- My Bones!

Dear Karl,
I'm so scared.  I'm 31 years old, and was diagnosed with osteoporosis one year ago. 

Not to worry -- it can be reversed -- with Bone Dense Calcium. 

My T-scores are -2.7 in the spine and -1.5 in my hip.  In addition, I also have a genetic condition called MSA.  Basically, that means I have very little elasticity in my ligaments, or every part of me is "double-jointed".  I didn’t understand exactly what the rhuemotologist was explaining to me, as I was clueless to the definition of osteoporosis.  I think in frustration with my questions and ignorance, he finally said, “Look, my best prognosis for you would to become a hunched-backed middle-aged woman, and to never move your joints again.” 

Here is the reason doctors are getting such a bad reputation! 

I replied, “That would mean to stop walking or moving?”  He replied, “Exactly.”  I suppose he was just frustrated, or wanted to scare me into taking this seriously, but nonetheless, I was devastated by that response. 

He has to get you softened up for the drugs or surgery. 

He prescribed Actenol and calcium/vitamin supplements for life and sent me on my way.  No more sports, no more exercise, no more smoking, and try eating balanced meals.  That was it.  I’ve since had 2nd and 3rd opinions who have slightly disagreed with him, but no one seems to be able to give me answers as to how this has happened to me, or more importantly, any optimistic prognosis.  The endocrinologist that I’ve seen has taken me off of actenol and all supplements in order to do a “urine bone turn-over analysis”.  I’m just complying with these doctors because I’m so confused and scared and at their mercy.  I don’t want to fade away at 31 years of age.  I don’t want to live in fear of fracturing something EVERYDAY.  I’m exhausted and in pain everyday.  I maybe comforted by some information on the “how’s and why’s”, but what I really want is to feel better and possibly live longer. 

My goodness, you can only say "possibly" live longer.  That is a terrible condition to be PUT IN. 

You realize that before you saw the doctor you may have pain, or whatever, but now you have the same pain plus a doom and gloom future -- it was the doctor who added that.

Until I stumbled onto your website, the only glimmer of hope I've felt is has been the discovery of Forteo.  But we both know about the politics of the FDA.  I may not be here when they finally approve that drug.  Forgive me, but I haven’t really read about the supplements your selling, as it! ’s getting late and I’ve just been scouring over the factual research you’ve posted. I’m not sure if you personally read the messages, but if you do I hope you read this:

I read them all.  I respond to each one -- usually within a few hours. 

  Know that a scared and hurting young woman found comforting information, empathy, and peace while visiting your site.

I cannot afford to NOT reply -- as this is the joy of my day and life just now.  My wife and daugther run my company -- I get to do exactly what I want to do.  I research, write web pages, and answer eMails. 

I haven’t even really asked a question!  I just thought maybe you might have some suggestions for me.  As I said, you don’t need to respond. It just kind of feels good that I’ve expressed my fear, somewhere other than my own head and to the doctors that don’t seem to hear me.

So little, it takes, to make so much difference.
